Art Therapy

Art therapy is an established form of psychotherapy where the created image allows for the expression and articulation of complex thoughts and feelings. A trained art therapist will provide creative and verbal support within a psychotherapeutic relationship.

The expressive arts engages all five disciplines of art in a healing process of discovery and change. Rather than focusing on a singular art modality, the expressive arts allows participants to interact with visual arts, movement/dance, music, drama/theatre, and/or writing/poetry, shifting between these various ways of expressing and exploring to best suit the therapeutic purpose.

Research supports that Art Therapy has been shown to:

  • Foster self-awareness

  • Increase a sense of agency and empowerment

  • Cultivate emotional resilience and insight

  • Enhance social skills

  • Improve cognitive and sensorimotor functioning

  • Decrease distress

  • Improve overall wellbeing
