Q&A with Emily

We took a moment to connect with our wonderful team at The Woods Arts & Wellness by asking them a few questions about themselves and their passions. Here’s what Emily graciously shared with us…

A PIECE OF ART THAT HAS MOVED YOU…

I studied photography throughout high school and loved the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Specifically, the photos he captured of children being completely themselves – dancing and playing on the streets of European cities. They captured pure in-the-moment joy!

A PLACE IN NATURE THAT EVOKES AWE FOR YOU…

A body of water, anywhere, early in the morning or in the evening when everything has calmed down and the water reflects back everything that surrounds it.

A PERSONAL PET PEEVE…

This is a hard one, I’m a fairly tolerant person. I’d say when someone doesn’t hold the door open for you when you’re right behind them. General kind manners is something I appreciate.

SOMETHING YOU FIND CHALLENGING…

Slowing down – I am learning this one but I’ve often moved at a mile a minute so I’m trying to get better at doing less and enjoying one thing at a time.

A FAVOURITE FOOD ITEM…

Almost all Indian and Thai dishes!

MORNING PERSON OR NIGHT OWL…

Morning person.

SOMETHING YOU WANT TO LEARN…

The piano. Since the day I was born, I was told I have ”piano hands” (long fingers) so it’s about time I put them to good use.

PREFERRED ARTISTIC MODALITY OR MEDIUM…

Photography

WHAT ARE YOU READING?

”Finding the Mother Tree” – Suzanne Simard

WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING?

I don’t watch much TV but I’m a big podcast listener – my podcasts range from Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s ”Feel Better, Live More” to ”Table Manners with Lennie and Jessie Ware” to Chani Nicholas’ ”Astrology of the Week Ahead”. If you ever need a recco, let me know.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?

I love old school soul music on the weekends, reggae on a sunny day, classical or jazz while I’m working, and funk or hip-hop while I’m cooking dinner during the week. Give me anything but country or metal/punk music.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL GRATEFUL FOR RIGHT NOW?

Where I live in the world. I am so lucky to live in such a beautiful place, to see the mountains, forest, and ocean everyday and be surrounded by some very cool people in my life.

YOUR HERO

My grandfather. He’s an incredible storyteller, historian, dinner party host, and long-distance dog walker even into his late 80s.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

This has been a long journey… my body. I think about this a lot as a movement teacher and I’m always thanking my body for moving me through everyday life and all of the things that I enjoy doing.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

Working in a beautiful stationary shop.

WHAT WOULD YOU WISH TO TELL YOUR 20-YEAR-OLD SELF?

It will all be worth it.

LIFE MOTTO OR MANTRA

Remember who you are.

HOW WOULD YOUR BEST FRIEND DESCRIBE YOU?

Thoughtful, ambitious, kind

IF YOU WERE A TREE, WHAT TYPE OF TREE MIGHT YOU BE?

A willow tree. I often have people imagine they are embodying a willow tree when we’re flowing and waving our bodies around in movement classes. Grounded yet fluid.
